In 2010 two acclaimed musicians, young Polish double bass virtuoso Szymon Marciniak and renowned Dutch pianist Yoram Ish-Hurwitz joined forces and formed a duo to explore little known but very interesting repertoire for this setting. 
If double bass and piano is not the most common combination on classical chamber music scene, these musicians seize the opportunity to introduce something new and unusual. Something which most of classical concert lovers never heard. Original choice of repertoire, great variety of musical styles as well as fresh, expressive interpretations and virtuosity will make their every concert an unforgettable experience.

The Duo has given its very successful debut on March 9th 2011 in the New Church The Hague (Nieuwe Kerk, Den Haag) performing ‘Nine Variants on Paganini’ by Frank Proto, an original work for double bass and piano. Program Season 2011/12: „2Bass“

Our first program titled „2Bass“ consists exclusively of original chamber and solo works for double-bass and piano. Most of the pieces we have chosen are from the 20th century, yet they represent great range of styles from late romatic till jazz and oriental music. Join us for this really adventurous musical trip! ╘De virtuoze romanticus╒is een aansprekend en toegankelijk programma,

bestaande uit romantisch-virtuoos repertoire, al dan niet bewerkt voor

contrabas en piano. Het opent met Schuberts beroemde Arpeggione-

sonate, oorspronkelijk geschreven voor dit in onbruik geraakte

instrument. Mendelssohns Lieder ohne Worte zijn vooral bekend als

lyrische pianominiaturen. Veel daarvan zijn bewerkt voor cello of bas

en piano. Liszts briljante Jeux d╒eau ê la Villa d╒Este is geònspireerd

op de talloze fonteinen in de tuin van de villa in Tivoli toen de

componist daar verbleef. Dat Bottesini, een Italiaanse negentiende-

eeuwse contrabasvirtuoos, vaak werd wordt betiteld als de Paganini

van de contrabas is goed te horen in Carnaval de Venice naar Rossini.

Het concert wordt besloten met Proto╒s Nine variants on Paganini,

geònspireerd op de bekende 24e caprice van de vioolvirtuoos.

╘Multicontrabas╒bestaat uitsluitend uit werken die speciaal voor

contrabas zijn geschreven. Met een veelkleurig palet aan stijlen

dat het programma rijk is, wordt het publiek meegenomen op een

ontdekkingsreis vol verrassingen en kan het kennismaken met vele

onvermoede kanten van de contrabas.
