Szymon Marciniak’s desire is to share musical experiences with the audience at highest level through giving every piece of music an authenticity and freshness. Through his original approach to his instrument and lively interpretations of classical bass-repertoire as well as transcriptions, he constantly receives acclaim and enthusiastic reactions from listeners and critics alike. Currently appointed principal double-bassist in the Residentie Orkest (The Hague Philharmonic), Szymon is pursuing parallel careers as both soloist and chamber musician. His passion for the Double-Bass solo repertoire has led him to work with different pianists as a duo artist. His wide range of musical interests has enabled him to perform in a variety of combinations including trios, quartets, quintets, octets and chamber orchestra. Szymon’s repertoire ranges from Baroque to Contemporary music.
He has performed with such distinguished artists and ensembles as Gustav Rivinius, Philip Setzer (Emerson String Quartet), Dmitri Ashkenazy, James Campbell, Philippe Graffin, Mirijam Contzen, Gil Sharon, Vera Beths, Paolo Giacometti, Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer, Grigorij Zhyslin, The Faure Quartett, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern. As a chamber musician Szymon is a frequent guest artist performing at many festivals throughout Europe. He is member of the New European Ensemble, specialized in contemporary and 20th century music. He also forms a duo with Dutch pianist Yoram Ish-Hurwitz.
As soloist Szymon has performed with the Münchener Kammerorchester, Schweriner Kammerorchester, Staatskapelle Schwerin, Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, Camerata Nova Szczecin, Kammersymphonie Berlin, the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen and the Atheneum Kamerorkest.
In 2005 the renowned German composer Jürg Baur wrote the opera “Der Roman mit dem Kontrabass” adapted from the book by A. Tchehov. This is a one hour opera including virtuosic solos for the double-bass composed by Baur especially for Szymon. The premiere in Düsseldorf in November 2005 was highly acclaimed. The German press named Marciniak “an exceptional double-bass player”. Following this event, Baur wrote a Concertino for Double-Bass and Orchestra which is expected to be premiered in the near future with Szymon as guest soloist.
Szymon Marciniak, was born in Poland and has moved to Germany in 2001. He graduated with dinstinction from the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf and Conservatorium Maastricht. He has participated in a number of master classes in Poland as well as abroad (Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland) where he worked with such renowned bass players as Martin Dobner, Rainer Zepperitz, Francois Rabbath and David Sinclair.
He has won first prizes at many international competitions such as J.M.Sperger International Double-Bass Competition in Ludwigslust (Germany) and Vriendenkrans Concours in Amsterdam. In 2009 he was semi-finalist at the 58th International ARD Competition in Munich.
Szymon has made several radio recordings (Polish Radio, the Westdeutscher Rundfunk, the Bayerischer Rundfunk, Dutch Radio 4 and Radio of South Tyrol).
Szymon is frequently asked to teach at different bass workshops. He has given public masterclasses at Conservatory of Amsterdam as well as bass workshops in The Hague and Michaelstein (Germany) and recently has been offered teaching position at the Prins-Claus-Conservatory of Groningen.
Currently Szymon performs on a Double-Bass made by Charles Quenoil (1945). He also plays a Double-Bass made by Harry Jansen (Amsterdam 2008), on loan from the Nationaal Muziekinstrumentenfonds of Amsterdam.
